📖 Core Principles of the Edition

1. Strict 1:1 Page Fidelity

Every digital page corresponds exactly to the physical book page of the historical 1916 first edition. Scholarly citations in secondary literature (e.g., “Macdonell 1916, p. 188”) can be looked up directly in the digital edition without any page offset conversion.

  • Extent: Exactly 520 pages (Front Matter i–xii, Main Text 1–508).
  • Pagination: Native PDF page labels (i–xii for the first 12 pages, followed by 1–508).
  • Synchronicity: Line breaks, paragraph blocks, and page boundaries match the historical edition.

2. Clarendon Typography

  • Tabular Dot Leaders: The table of contents features right-aligned tabular leader dots for visual guidance.
  • Running Headlines: Authentic paragraph and section markers ([15 on verso pages, 15] on recto pages).
  • Small Capitals: Front matter, chapter headings, and grammatical categories are typeset with genuine typographic small capitals.
  • Two-Column Register Layout: The Vedic Index (pp. 471–498) and General Index (pp. 499–508) are rendered as two-column registers.

3. Phonetic & Diacritic Precision

  • Full representation of all IAST diacritics (e.g., ṛ, ṝ, ḷ, ṣ, ś, ṇ, ṃ, ḥ).
  • Native rendering of Vedic pitch accents: Udātta (acute / high tone), Anudātta (grave / low tone underline), and Svarita (circumflex / overline glide).
  • Seamless inline integration of Devanāgarī glyphs.

4. Archival Architecture & Artifacts

Beyond the print-ready publication PDF, the edition provides all raw data sources and machine-readable archival formats for linguistic processing, long-term preservation, and mobile reading:
